Security Flaw Revealed
It is estimated that 22 million doors across the UK could be at risk from a method of attack where the door lock cylinder (Barrel) can be broken in just five seconds.
Although for obvious reasons CIA cannot disclose the exact tools or methods used by burglars to snap the Euro-Profile (or European Profile) style cylinder, it is true that the knowledge of how to do so is widespread.
No matter how secure the uPVC door's multipoint locking mechanism is, it can easily be overcome once the cylinder has been removed and many burglars know they can easily smash the conventional cylinders in seconds, using simple everyday tools.
This method of attack has been increasingly used by raiders over the last two years and now that knowledge of this method is becoming so well known the threat can only grow further.
Mul-T-Lock Break Secure Cylinders
Mul-T-Lock’s range of ‘Break Secure’ cylinders are specifically designed to combat the growing threat of unauthorised entry whereby the criminals ‘snap’ the Euro-Profile style cylinder commonly fitted to most uPVC and Patio doors.
To combat this growing problem two major lock manufacturers have designed cylinders that although they will still snap, they will snap in a predetermined position leaving intact a portion of the cylinder that will still provide security and still require key operation to open, thus preventing the easy manipulating of the locking system.
Therefore this threat can easily be considerably reduced simply by upgrading the cylinder to one that is specifically designed to prevent this method of attack
CIA therefore recommends that all vulnerable doors using Euro-Profile cylinders be upgraded to incorporate Break Secure cylinders as soon as possible.
The growing problem of this type of attack has been highlighted by two recent independent newspaper articles published in both the Yorkshire Evening Post and the Daily Mail (18/02/06).
